LSC Participates in Dokkyo International Forum

On December 2-3, LSC Executive Director Shannan Wilber represented LSC at an international forum on children's advocacy at Dokkyo University in Japan. This spring, Dokkyo Law School will launch Japan's first children's law center. Panelists from Canada, Norway, Sweden, Japan and the US were invited to present information about their child advocacy programs. Shannan submitted a paper describing the status of disadvantaged children in San Francisco, the legal rights of children in the US and the model employed by LSC. Representatives from Dokkyo Law School visited LSC in June 2006, and will incorporate several aspects of LSC's model into their new clinic.

Pro Bono Highlight: Jarrett Green, Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP

Jarrett Green is an associate in the Litigation Department of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom's San Francisco office. Since joining LSC's pro bono panel in 2005, Jarrett has expressed a willingness to take on difficult cases. As a summer associate at Skadden, he represented an East Bay elementary school student in a school discipline case. Working with an LSC social worker, he was able to keep the minor in school and ensure that he received special education services to address a learning disability.

Most recently, he represented a minor facing expulsion for alleged gang involvement in Napa. Despite the distance, Jarrett met repeatedly with the client, his family, and witnesses in the case. He and Skadden legal assistant Elisa Anderson also spent many hours preparing for the hearing, devoting nearly 140 hours to the case. Working with Lisbel Dolme at the Your Alternatives to Risk Program, Jarrett was able to connect his client to the support he needed to succeed in school and prevent future disciplinary problems. Ultimately, he was able to prevent his client's expulsion. The minor is now making phenomenal academic, social and personal progress.

On behalf of these clients, we extend our thanks to Jarrett Green, Elisa Anderson, and Lisbel Dolme for their incredible work and commitment to youth. Thank you for your excellent work on behalf of children!

LSC to author monograph on immigrant youth in the juvenile justice system

LSC is pleased to announce it has begun work on the first comprehensive resource for juvenile probation staff and defenders on immigrant youth in the juvenile justice system. Many of these youth are eligible for immigration relief because they have suffered violence, abuse, exploitation and persecution - both in their countries of origin and in this country. Attaining status may be the key to the youth's survival and successful transition to adulthood. The decisions that are made by juvenile court officials - including probation staff, prosecutors, defenders and judges - can have significant impact on the availability of these immigration remedies.

The monograph will be completed and published later this year. The publication of this resource has been made possible by the generous support of the Annie E. Casey Foundation.
