You have a right to express yourself, including your gender identity!  Here are the answers to questions you might have about expressing your gender identity.  If you have more questions, you should call LSC’s intake line.  You can also call the Transgender Law Center, at 415-865-0176 or check out their website at http://www.transgenderlawcenter.org

How do I legally change my name?

If you are under 18 and have your parent or guardian’s permission, you can ask the court to change your name.  You will need to fill out papers and give them to the court, put a notice in the newspaper, and go to a hearing at court.

How do I legally change my gender?

If you are under 18, you will need your parent’s or guardian’s permission.  You will also need a letter from a doctor saying you had surgery to change your gender.  With these things, you can ask the court to change your gender.

How do I get my new name and/or gender on my ID or driver’s license?

To change your name, you will need to fill out a form at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), give your thumbprint, have your picture taken and pay the fee.  For more information, click here:  http://www.dmv.ca.gov/dl/dl_info.htm#two504.
