GLOSSARY

Adoption is when the court makes someone your parent.

Emancipation is when you are under 18 but you are legally an adult.  This means you can live on your own and have most of the rights and responsibilities of an adult.

Healthcare providers are people who help you with your health, like doctors, nurses, dentists and counselors.

Immigration status has to do with whether you have “papers” to live in the United States.

Living on your own is when you live away from your parent or guardian and are paying your own rent, food and other bills.

Making money legally is when you get money from a job, not from doing things that are a crime, like selling drugs or being a prostitute.

Neglect is when you aren’t getting what you need—like food, clothes, medical care or schooling—from the person who is supposed to be taking care of you.
